(fú) Bountiful Bat Acrylic Brooch

Probably the most well-recognized character seen during Chinese New Year, 福 means ‘good fortune’, ‘blessings’ or ‘luck’. To the Chinese, the bat – far from being repulsive – is actually an auspicious symbol because the word for bat 蝠 sounds the same as 福. A popular decoration pasted on doors and walls, 福 is often seen affixed upside down. Why? Because ‘upside down fortune’ 福倒 (fú dào) sounds just like ‘fortune has arrived’ 福到 and bats love to hang upside down in their caves too :-) Even better if it’s a ‘red bat’, because 红蝠 (hóng fú) sounds the same as 洪福: ‘abundant fortune!’
